Finding Your September Rhythm

September often feels like a fresh start. The holidays are behind us, children return to school, and many people are trying to settle back into a routine. For some, that’s energising, for others, it can feel overwhelming. As a therapist, I often notice that this time of year brings a mix of emotions: pressure to get organised, excitement for new beginnings, and sometimes a sense of “where do I even start?”

The truth is, routines don’t have to be rigid or complicated. They’re about creating small anchors in your day that help you feel grounded, balanced, and supported, even when life is full and workdays run long. Here are a few gentle tips to ease back into the flow this September:

Start small. Choose one or two things to focus on rather than overloading yourself with goals. That might be going to bed at a regular time, booking a weekly class, or setting aside ten minutes for yourself in the evening.

Prioritise your wellbeing. When days are busy, it’s tempting to put your own needs last. But a short workout, a therapy session, or even a mindful pause can do wonders for energy and resilience. Think of it as fuelling yourself so you can handle everything else more effectively.

Create transition rituals. If you’re working long days, find small ways to mark the shift between “work” and “home.” That could be changing into different clothes, a short walk, or a playlist that helps you switch off. These rituals tell your body and mind it’s time to reset.

Bookend your day. Anchor your mornings and evenings with one consistent practice, whether that’s stretching before coffee or reading before bed. These simple bookends bring structure and calm, even if the middle of your day is hectic.

Give yourself permission to adjust. A routine is there to support you, not to add pressure. Some weeks it will go to plan, and other weeks it won’t, that’s okay. It’s about coming back to what helps you feel steady.
