Frequently asked questions.
At EPJ Therapy, we understand that starting therapy can feel like a big step. Below you’ll find answers to common questions about counselling, what to expect, confidentiality, and how to get started.
What is therapy and how does it work?
Therapy (also called counselling) is a safe and confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with a qualified professional. Together, we work to understand patterns, build coping skills, and create meaningful change. Each session is tailored to your needs and goals.
What kinds of issues can therapy help with?
Therapy can help with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship difficulties, grief, self-esteem, and significant life transitions. It’s also useful for personal growth or when you simply feel “stuck” and want to better understand yourself.
Do you offer online or in-person sessions?
Yes. I offer online therapy via secure video sessions and in-person counselling from my therapy room in Richmond, Surrey.
Online therapy is a flexible and effective option for clients across the UK, allowing you to access support from the comfort of your home. In-person sessions provide a calm, private space for those who prefer to meet face to face. Both options are equally supportive and confidential; it’s simply about what works best for you.
What happens in the first session?
Before starting therapy, we’ll have a short phone conversation to get to know each other and see whether I’m the right fit for your needs. This gives you a chance to ask questions and share a little about what you’re hoping for from therapy.
The first full session is then an opportunity for us to explore things in more depth. We’ll discuss what brings you to therapy, your goals, and how I work as a therapist. There’s no pressure; it’s a space to talk openly and see whether you feel comfortable continuing together.
How long and how often are sessions?
Sessions last 50 minutes and take place weekly or fortnightly, depending on your needs and availability. Consistency is key to making progress, but we can discuss a schedule that works best for you.
How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?
Finding the right fit is important. I encourage an initial consultation where you can ask questions and get a feel for my approach. If you decide I’m not the right match, I’m happy to suggest other options or colleagues who might suit you better.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, everything you share in therapy is kept strictly confidential. The only exceptions are if there’s a risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, or when required by law. I’ll always discuss this with you if possible.
How much does therapy cost?
Sessions cost from £65 per 50-minute session, depending on whether you choose online or face-to-face therapy.
Payment is made before each session via bank transfer.
Do you accept insurance or NHS referrals?
No. EPJ Therapy works with clients on a private basis and does not accept insurance or NHS referrals. Sessions are self-funded, and payment is made directly before each appointment.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule a session?
Please give at least 72 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Cancellations with less notice may be charged in full, as that time has been reserved for you.
How long will I need to be in therapy?
There’s no fixed timeline; some people benefit from a few sessions focused on a specific issue, while others choose longer-term therapy for ongoing personal growth. We’ll review your progress regularly to make sure therapy continues to meet your needs.
Can therapy really help me?
Yes. Research consistently shows that therapy helps people reduce distress, improve relationships, and build resilience. Many clients find that simply having a safe, non-judgmental space to talk makes a significant difference.
Where are you based?
I offer therapy sessions from my private therapy room in Richmond, Surrey, or online for clients across the UK. Both options provide a safe, confidential space to explore whatever you’re going through in a way that suits you best.
